The Lord is my shepherd (SSSA (some divisi))

The Lord is my shepherd was originally written by Margie Harrison in 1994 for the A Cappella Singers – a student choral group formed and directed by her while teaching at The de Ferrers Academy, Staffordshire. It was revised in 2019 for the St Luke’s Choir, Kew, London. (Margie Harrison)

This setting of Psalm 23 begins in three-parts, and ends, dramatically, in six, providing opportunity for divisi altos. With a greater than two-octave range, the piece exploits the possibilities when writing for Upper Voices. In an accessible, modern style, utilising gentle syncopation, this setting is reminiscent of a contemporary music idiom derived from gospel music. The texture is initially melody-dominated, with a middle section where the altos provide a long tonic pedal-point in the relative minor, D minor. In keeping with the style, the piece modulates up a tone for the final section, ending with a jazzy cadence, and an enduring ear-worm!
