The Pilgrimes Travels (SATB (divisi) & organ)
The Reverend Lucy Winkett, who was the first female priest at St Paul’s Cathedral, commissioned this piece for the Cathedral Choir when she left her post as Precentor there in 2010. It felt appropriate to use a text by Emilia Lanier, the Elizabethan poet, who lived nearby to Old St Paul’s. Her poem, Salve Deus Rex Judaeorum, published in 1611, made her the first female professional poet in Britain. Her family on both sides were luthiers, and so the anthem is based on a simple four-note motif (A-B-D-C#) from a Fantasy for viols by her brother-in-law, Alfonso Ferrabosco.
This anthem, dedicated to Lucy Winkett, was first performed by St Paul’s Cathedral Consort on the Feast of St Mary Magdalene 22nd July 2010, conducted by Andrew Carwood, with Simon Johnson, organ. (Judith Bingham)

Les Saintes Maries de la Mer (SSA (some divisi))
Les Saintes Maries de la Mer was commissioned by the City of London Festival, and first performed in June, 2014 by the girls’ choirs of Southwark Cathedral, St Alban’s Abbey and Guildford Cathedral, in Southwark Cathedral, London.
Mary Jacobe and Mary Salome were two of the ‘Three Marys’ who were present at the crucifixion and at the tomb of Jesus. In one legend from the Camargue, depicted in this poem by Elizabeth Cook, they were put in a boat without a sail or an oar, along with their servant, an Egyptian woman called Sara, and were washed up on the shore of southern France, where they preached the gospel. Saint Sara, sometimes referred to as ‘Black Sara’ from the Romany ‘Sara e Kali’, is particular to the Romany People as their saint, and every year the three women are celebrated at a festival in the small town of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer in the Camargue.
